Is it important for a roofing firm to have workman's comp?  If they don't and someone gets hurt could they sue the customer for doctor/hospital bills?

If they don't have insurance to cover their workers in case of a fall, the injured person can come after you... YES!!! You want to make sure they have a license, they are bonded, they have insurance, and that they have the proper paperwork. You should see a contract and at the end of the job, paperwork releasing you from any liens, mechanical or material. This is the most important part of your home. Do your research, and get a reputable company to do the work. I know there are some guys trying to get started, and that is ok too. Just make sure all their paperwork checks out. In the case of a new company starting up, see if they are certified installers of a specific roof material. Then at least you have a manufacturer giving you some back up...

You want to have contracts. These contracts state that it is their responsibility to seek out insurance and the company is in no way reliable in the event of an accident.
