Local directories aren't as big in the SEO world anymore, so if that is your aim, it may not help much...
It might however, be worth building a mini-angie's list where you just list contractors or services you recommend personally. I had a buddy that did something similar. He had all sorts of sites he recommended for different things. I ended up making it my home page for years.
There were "objective blogs" that would tout the wonders of particular companies or services, in order to boost SEO. Google got wise and they actually penalize you for them now.
You might just consider a blog on your own site, or getting other local tech savvy folks to trade guest blog posts.
The other option would be to build a site for your local Chamber of Commerce ( or start one in your town if they don't have one yet, ) and post local happenings, businesses, apartments for rent, classifieds, etc.
If you find you are looking do drive more business, tweak your business site to be less sales oriented, and more informational. Have tutorials on proper gutter cleaning, roof inspection, .... whatever you think might be helpful in getting people to realize that you gave them enough useful info that if they don't need you, that they will come to you when they do.
Here is a good example of a site that has lots of info on it that is more than just selling. For the record, I think it is a little obnoxious, but there is good info. http://www.kellyroofing.com/
Just some thoughts.
