Many people have told me not to bother with Angie's List, Home Advisor, Thumbtack etc because the leads are cold, or sold to multiple contractors, or people lowballing you and you get low value jobs.

Have you tried these services? Is hiring a marketing firm the best route? Google? Facebook? I mean price is one thing, but I want results.

Plus salesmen as SO expensive, they can only cold call and door knock for so long.

Thanks.

I have heard good things about Home Advisor - I have a plumber friend who got his business off the ground with it, before he even had a website, but he works in a relatively low competition area. So it may not work for everyone.

Honestly, directory type sites are very old school and are mostly beneficial for boosting your SEO. I think it's good to have a profile there, but not necessarily to rely on them for leads. People will usually go straight to Google and type in something like "roofing + (city name)". If you can hire a marketing firm that knows how to do this, it's a great investment as the results last for a long time. Sometimes I think sites like Angie's list and so on, are a gamble you'll never know what you might get. But like mentioned earlier, building directory sites and using local SEO can generate better results that you can "control."
