Every now and then I see people working on big jobs like Walmart.  How do these companies get jobs like that?  Do they service all the Walmart stores in an area?

Sometimes yes... If you are looking to get large jobs, you need to find your local large commercial builder, Get listed under them as a sub. Also check property management companies. Lading these things is a full time job. facilities managers are ones that call you out on leaks and building a relationship with them is key for landing bigger jobs. Check your local plans center ( most places have them) and you can review existing projects with RFP's out. ( Request for Proposal.) Prepare to be overwhelmed, because there is an insane amount of paperwork on a lot of these jobs.

You have to maintain relationships. I have done it in the past, where I give facilities managers a free yearly inspection. Often times if the problem is less than $10k, they will just hand you the repair or install. If it is over that, you can usually get yourself in there to write the spec, so you just write up a solution that only your company can provide.

Politics... that is how you land the big jobs. It takes months of work, sometimes the sales cycle is years.

You are a wealth of information.  I think I need a few more years in this business before I can start my own.  Until then I'll keep working hard.

Knowing other established business owners in the area is key.

Clearly you guys have experience landing big jobs.  It makes me wish I owned a roofing company and not working for one.  Maybe some day that will happen.
