How common is it for a roofing company to only focus on residential jobs?  I’ve never done anything even remotely commercial.  I’m starting to think the company I work for will never do any.  Is it possible that I’ll be stuck doing residential stuff only?

There are roofing contractors all over that specialize. There is a guy in town here, that only does tile roofs, period... If you want a tile roof, he is the guy to go to. If you are a roofing contractor and someone asks you for a tile roof, you sub to him... it is pretty much all he does. There is no shame in starting with exclusively asphalt residential and subbing the other things out you come across and after a while getting a crew of guys to learn another product if you are getting enough call for it.

Once you get some experience, you can start to chase commercial. It is a whole different animal in installation and insurance. You will find tons of roofing contractors that only do one or the other. If you aren't experienced enough you can sink your company trying to diversify too much.

That’s some good advice.  You really do know what you’re talking about.  I’m just a guy trying to make a living doing roofing.  Which do you think I can earn more money doing?  Residential or commercial?

Mine does both but you have to have 10 years experience to do commercial work.

It's quite common, I've worked for companies that do both and some that do one or the other. There are companies all over that specialize in one thing or another. I've seen some companies just do solar and green roofing, some just do new roof construction, and some that just do repairs. There's a lot of business to go around.

often times commercial jobs take alot more time and focus than residential jobs, bidding wars can sometimes take months to finalize on some jobs. with residential its easy and simple, talk with the customer and then set a schedule that fits in both your time frames. Most times though it all comes down to what the roofing company specializes in.

It's also a good idea to try commercial roofing jobs if you want more jobs.
